Herbal Tinctures

Herbal tinctures, often considered supplements, are herbal extracts that can be made with a small number of ingredients. In general, you need a little bit of herb, either fresh or dried, and food alcohol. The latter extracts the active ingredients from the plants so that they are concentrated as a liquid.  Unlike capsules or tablets, tinctures are quickly absorbed by the body and can provide fast relief for a variety of ailments, from anxiety and depression to digestive issues and pain relief.

The method of preparing a tincture involves macerating the plant or parts of the plant in a large volume of food grade alcohol for some weeks. After this time, the alcohol absorbs the medicinal properties of the plant.

For the tincture: Fill a glass jar 3/4 full with the herbs, leaving 1/4 of the container, at this point, pour 300ml alcohol over the herbs until it reaches the rim of the jar. Remember to cover them completely. The maceration time takes from 3 to 4 weeks, leave more time for even better results. Stir occasionally. After the time has elapsed, strain the tincture through a funnel covered with gauze. Dispose the herbs and keep the liquid. Apply to areas of infection.
